Why Bertrand likes: The works of Etienne Gaudet remind me of my stays in the Loire Valley and in particular its landscapes and castles. The nature lover that I am cannot remain insensitive to the artist's ability to reveal to us the hidden treasures of the most beautiful regions of France.
Expert's comment: Etienne Gaudet's talent is to perceive with incredible vigor and intensity the mysteries of landscapes to better reveal them to us. His favorite subjects are the Loire Valley, Brittany and the south of France. Where some pass indifferent, the artist lights a flame with his colors and makes us aware of the beauty of things. We will therefore not be surprised to know that before painting, he liked to listen to the legends, stories and sayings of the past of the inhabitants. As a lover of nature and using the watercolor technique that does not allow for repentance, the artist captures these ephemeral moments that only the eye of an adult can detect.
Biography of the artist: Étienne GAUDET is a painter and engraver born in Château Chinon in the Nièvre and died in Blois in the Loir et cher. He has been painting since the age of 11, inspired by the landscapes of his native Morvan. In 1915, the artist was in Nevers and took his first painting lessons at the municipal school of fine arts. He then perfected his talent advised by artists like Fernand Chalandre who introduced him to engraving, but also by André Deslignères, Georges Tardy, Pierre Péradon, Maurice Locquin whose masters are those of the Barbizon school. Quickly it is the call of the Loire Valley which pushes him to go up the river and to paint all its aspects as well as the surrounding countryside from Nivernais to Touraine. The artist will enjoy an important regional notoriety. The regional and sometimes Parisian press will repeatedly praise the talent of the artist who will illustrate many books with his woodcuts. But all are unanimous, there is in his watercolors a poetry worthy of the greatest masters of the Barbizon school such as Gustave Courbet or Jean-François Millet.
