Why Bertrand Likes : When we see the precision and finesse of Pierre d'AVESN's drawings, we immediately understand why René Lalique relies on him very young. I find the rendering of the volumes in gouache and pastel incredible, one would almost believe that it is possible to take in hand these glass objects in the Art Deco style.
Why Nathan likes : René Lalique (1860-1945) marked the times of Art Nouveau and Art Deco with his personality. Pierre d'AVESN, his young protégé of the next generation, is a very talented designer and his hyper sophisticated drawings take us back to this incredible period between the wars.
Expert's comments and artist's biography : Expert commentary and biography: Sculptor and designer, Pierre d'AVESN graduated from the School of Decorative Arts in Paris. His talent as a designer earned him being hired at 14 by René Lalique for whom he worked for 10 years. Throughout his career, he worked as a creative for the largest crystal factories: Saint Laurent, Daum, Holophane (Verlys) and Choisy le Roi. The magnificent drawings that we offer you are preparatory works for the realization of crystal art objects created by the artist during the mid-1930s. These works were hung in the studio from where the frequent presence of small pin holes at the ends. The general quality of his drawings and the objects to which they gave birth (cups, vases, planters, especially table tops, decanters, bookends, paperweights ...) show that at this time industrial production and art were not not incompatible. Pierre d'AVESN is undoubtedly after René Lalique, the most important creator of Art Deco style models and decorations in the field of industrial art crystal (Press molded glass). The artist's works are characteristic of the Art Deco movement which shows, after extravagance and the curves of Art Nouveau, a return to classical rigor: symmetry, stylized orders and floral decor but severely framed.
