Expert commentary : Painter, cartoonist and cartoonist, friend of Sempé and Gosciny, Henri Morez (1922-2017) was spotted from an early age by the painter Emmanuel Mané-Katz. A talented artist, he exhibited at the age of 16 at the Salon d'Automne in 1938. But the war will turn everything upside down, denounced, his family is arrested and deported and he will never see them again. Art and humor thus become an antidote to the gloom, to the despair of each one, a means of survival for the artist and the spectator. In the 1950s, his drawings were published by Le Figaro littéraire, Paris Match, Jours de France… He also illustrates with his 1000 drawings a Larousse dictionary for the use of foreigners (he was born in Romania and arrived in France in 1927, his real name is Hers Askenasi). His qualities as a designer and his humor enabled him to win the prize for best comedian Robert Carrizey in 1954. His favorite subjects are drawn from current events, daily life and his little worries, women, children, the city.
