Expert commentary : This still life has no intention, the emotion arises from the colors and their agreements (complementary colors red and green) as well as from the strength of the outlines. Flowers have always been favored by Matisse, they display their charm within a distinctly Cezanian composition but full of a clear and happy serenity. Objects as in Cézanne's work become the transposition of the natural world. This work, like many others in Matisse's work, shows how painting is a matter of style and not exclusively of subject. To make the link and understand the work in more detail, we advise you to read the artist's biography below.

Biography : Henri Matisse born December 31, 1869 in Cateau-Cambrésis, and died, November 3, 1954, in Nice, is a French painter, draftsman, engraver and sculptor. A major figure of the twentieth century, his influence on the art of the second part of the century is considerable by the use of simplification, stylization, synthesis and color as the sole subject of painting, both for many figurative or abstract painters who will claim to him and his discoveries. He was the leader of Fauvism, and is one of those painters who at the beginning of the 20th century like Derain, Van Dongen, Dufy, Marquet ... separate the color from its reference to the object and thus release its expressive force. Provocative reaction to Impressionism, they also intend to respond violently to the challenge of photography, painting being much more than the representation of nature. From Pablo Picasso, who was his friend and considered him as his great rival, to Andy Warhol who "wanted to be Matisse", all the painters of the twentieth century were confronted with the glory and the genius of Matisse.

Matisse discovered his own personality in 1905-1906, during which time he frequented Derain and the sculptor Maillol who gave him access to the fabulous Gauguin collection by Daniel de Monfried. Matisse found the answer to many questions there. The painting is decorative but also symbolic and expressive. He must also be inspired by the formal rigor and the clear colors of Cézanne to find his way. Sacred after this period as one of the two princes of painting with Picasso, he lives in laborious solitude between Nice and Paris without ever allowing himself to be locked in by an artistic current. After many trips, Matisse began a new life in 1940 and his painting was then more innovative and he turned more to the essential, to synthesis. In 1945, a major Matisse retrospective was organized at the Salon d'Automne in Paris after the one on Picasso in 1944, and on Braque in 1943. Bedridden, disabled, but "alive", Matisse could no longer paint or practice techniques that required thinners (water or oil). He then invents the technique of cut-out papers, which he can, in his bed, cut with scissors, papers that his assistants place and stick in the places desired by the artist.
