Why Bertrand likes : Etienne Gaudet's works remind me of my stays in the Loire Valley and in particular its landscapes and castles. As a nature lover, I cannot remain insensitive to the artist's ability to reveal the hidden treasures of the most beautiful regions of France.

Expert's comment : Etienne Gaudet's talent is to perceive the mysteries of landscapes with incredible vigour and intensity in order to better reveal them to us. His favourite subjects are the Loire Valley, Brittany and the South of France. Where some people are indifferent, the artist lights a flame with his colours and makes us aware of the beauty of things. It is no surprise that before painting, he liked to listen to the legends, stories and sayings of the past of the inhabitants. As a lover of nature and with the help of the watercolour technique which allows no repentance, the artist captures those ephemeral moments that only the eye of a great man can detect.

Artist's biography : Étienne GAUDET is a painter and engraver born in Château Chinon in the Nièvre and died in Blois in the Loir et Cher. He painted since the age of 11, inspired by the landscapes of his native Morvan. In 1915, the artist was in Nevers and took his first painting lessons at the municipal school of fine arts. He then perfected his talent under the guidance of artists such as Fernand Chalandre, who introduced him to engraving, but also André Deslignères, Georges Tardy, Pierre Péradon and Maurice Locquin, whose masters were those of the Barbizon school. The call of the Loire Valley quickly pushed him to go up the river and paint all its aspects as well as the surrounding countryside from the Nivernais to Touraine. The artist enjoyed a high level of regional fame. The regional and sometimes Parisian press repeatedly praised the talent of the artist, who illustrated many books with his woodcuts. But all are unanimous, there is in his watercolours a poetry worthy of the greatest masters of the Barbizon school such as Gustave Courbet or Jean-François Millet.
